White House Announces Government Employee Layoffs as Funding Gap Approaches Third Week
Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official procedure for letting employees go.
Although the official did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the government has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to communities across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.
At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to execute layoffs.
An analysis argued that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the end of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the period.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
